## What you can post on Mastodon

- **What you connect:** Mastodon accounts
- **Post:** Up to 500 characters, with every link counted as 23
- **Media:** Up to 4 described images, or one video or GIF
- **Who sees it:** Public, quiet public (kept off public timelines) or followers only
- **Extras:** A content warning, the post’s language, and a poll with 2 to 4 answers

## Once it’s live

- **First comment:** Yes, as a reply from the same account
- **Replies to comments:** Not automatic yet. You can read and answer replies from Shager
- **Numbers:** Yes: favourites, boosts and replies per post

## Questions

### Do I give you my password?

No. You type your server’s address and sign in on your server’s own page. Your password never reaches us, and you can disconnect the account in Shager any time.

### Why 500 characters?

That’s Mastodon’s default, and most servers keep it. A link always counts as 23 characters, and a content warning counts along with the text. Shager counts the way Mastodon does, so you know before posting if it’s too long.

### Which servers can I connect?

Any Mastodon server, like mastodon.social, and other servers that work with Mastodon’s API. Type the server’s address or your full handle (@name@server). You can connect several accounts.
